USAID supports local NGO to partner locals from Asaro in Eastern Highlands to protect and promote environmental conservation.

U.S Agency for International Development (USAID) PNG Lukautim Graun Program (LGP) in partnership with Centre for Environmental Law and Community Rights Inc. (CELCOR) is working with locals from Upper Asaro Local Level Government (LLG) in Eastern Highlands to conserve their environment. On the 1st of March, the Upper Asaro LLG and CELCOR came together to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that paves way for all parties to work together to put in place laws to protect and conserve their environment.

“This small but significant event marks the beginning of collaborative conservation and environmental protection efforts in the Upper Asaro LLG,” said Peter Bosip, CELCOR’s Executive Director.

The key objectives in the MoU is for CELCOR’s to assist Upper Asaro LLG in formulating its own LLG Laws on conservation, biodiversity, and environmental protection.

“This commitment emphasizes a shared vision to safeguard the rich and unique natural environment and its biodiversity of the Bismarck Forest Corridor,” said Mr Bosip.

Mr. Bosip said “This MoU will open doors for CELCOR to assist Upper Asaro LLG to further realize their conservation endeavours.”

Upper Asaro LLG President, Peter Siune expressed the profound significance of the moment, emphasizing, ’This is an important event for the community, LLG, and District as this will be the first time CELCOR will assist the LLG on environmental conservation matters.”

Wildlife Conservation Society, another of USAID LGP’s partner NGO also attended the Mou signing and offered to support the locals endeavor for conservation. CELCOR is a recipient of USAID small grants.
