U.S Agency for International Development (USAID) in partnership with Centre for Excellence in Financial Inclusion (CEFI) is working to increase financial literacy, with emphasis on women in rural and remote communities in Papua New Guinea. Two local trainers, Sharon Nako and Ebony Nungki, certified by CEFI and supported by USAID’s Lukautim Graun Program (LGP), helped train 60 participants, mainly women in Kainantu Eastern Highlands Province. On 31st July, 35 of the 60 participants graduated with certificates in financial literacy with the remaining 25 due to receive theirs at a later date. Sixteen of the 35 graduates also registered for National Identification Cards (NID) and aim to open accounts with the nationwide microfinance bank, MiBank. As part of the FLT the graduates are vested with the basic knowledge of saving and budgeting and have a better understanding of the foundational financial skills required to create new enterprises and increase household and personal financial security, particularly for women. The training is part of USAID’s commitment to support and empower women in PNG so they can fully participate in the formal economy. A participant, Dorcas Wase, said, “The training received was first of its kind. It has a huge impact on the life of the individuals who received the training. With other qualifications received from tertiary institutions, people still do not have and practice proper savings and budgeting at home, workplace and in life. FLT is a must that everyone in the community and workplace should attend to be financially literate to plan well and use their money well as we are in a critical time where money is losing its value and we should use money wisely.”

USAID and its implementing partners continue to empower people, especially women in rural communities to access economic opportunities that improve their livelihood prospects.
